Jersey Shore town to install lightning sensors, sirens after lifeguard’s death

A Jersey Shore town plans to install lightning prediction and detection equipment to protect beach staff and visitors following the death last summer of a lifeguard from a lightning strike in a neighboring town.

Brick officials had previously looked into lightning sensors, but the high price tag initially deterred them. The fatal lighting strike in South Seaside Park in nearby Berkeley Township led Brick officials to revisit the idea and approve $40,000 for lightning detection in the township’s 2022 budget.

Dan Santaniello, Brick’s recreation director, said he researched the Thor Guard detection system and visited Marco Island in Florida in February to see it first hand.
